Meet Sarma!

Sarma Merdian is a passionate and dedicated community organizer seeking election in Ward 6 of Clarence-Rockland. She lives in Clarence Creek with her family.

Born and raised in Montreal, Sarma’s family was actively involved in the Latvian community. Upon completion of a B.A. at McGill University, Sarma moved to Germany to pursue an additional degree at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz in translation (English/German/French) with a concentration in economics, commerce, and international business. She married and remained in Germany where she embarked on a career as a project manager in the localization field providing companies with the opportunity to successfully reach new, international markets. After returning to Canada, Sarma and her family happily settled in the City of Clarence-Rockland.

Working in Project Management and raising a family has allowed Sarma to hone her organizational and multi-tasking skills.  Her experience as a board member, responsible for the allocation of the Clarence-Rockland Library budget, and her responsibilities managing the accounting for the Trinity Latvian Church (a registered charity), have also helped her develop sound and transparent fiscal management experience.

Sarma has devoted much of her spare time, in a volunteer capacity, to a variety of community organizations, including the library board, Clarence Creek figure skating club, and St. Patrick Catholic Elementary School reading program. She and her family have had the opportunity to participate in many wonderful sports and cultural activities and continue to strengthen their roots in Clarence Creek, unite their neighbours and commit to the sustainable development of their community.

Sarma’s interest in seeking election peeked when working as an enumerator for the 2021 Census. This experience allowed her to meet so many members of the local community and to develop a clearer understanding of the importance of the census for municipal governments when it comes to effectively planning and efficiently running a successful and inclusive community.
